Information Hierarchies, Chemical Evolution and the Transition From Non-Living to Living Matter

NASA Astrobiology NPP Alumni Seminar Series
The necessary steps leading to the emergence of life have been notoriously challenging to pin down. In the first half of the talk, I will discuss how in silico explorations can provide new insights into how chemical systems evolve and complexity that go beyond the standard Darwinian paradigm. A key challenge in these approaches is identifying “What defines almost life?”. In the second half I discuss potential measures of the transition from non-living to living matter that might provide an answer to this question.
