EPO Activity: Native American Outreach

Project Progress

MSU’s outreach team is hosting three science days during the school year at three elementary schools in the St. Labre school system in eastern Montana. The target audience is 3rd and 4th grade students and their teachers. St. Labre’s student enrollment is nearly 100% Native American from the nearby Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. In April 2011, MSU hosted an all-day science day at each of the schools, with a three-part science curriculum plan. The subjects tackled were water chemistry, biotic communities and substrate/parent material. Teachers and students did three pre-lessons, the science day, and a post-lesson to evaluate the value of the interaction. Two more science days are planned for 2011-12 school year.
